Every child learns differently and at the pace they can personally handle. The key is to teach them how to absorb the information so they can apply it to every learning opportunity.

I wanted my kids to learn how to add double & triple digit addition, with regrouping.

without using paper.

These are the 3 things I did that helped me meet this goal with my 2 oldest.

  • Completing a Math Worksheet in a timed manner

  • Having them solve long Math equations on a white board

  • Drilling Math questions at unexpected times

Completing a Math Worksheet in a timed manner

I would usually write 30 questions on a notebook which works fine, but eventually I purchased this math workbook below. This saved me time, printing supplies, and a headache-It was a game changer! I would give my kids 2 - 3 minutes to complete the worksheets, the equations are your simple 2 + 3 = , 12 + 8 =

Solving Long Double Digit Equations on a white board

While we are doing Math in our School room, I write a long math equation on the board that they have to solve. In the beginning I would not give them hard questions. Below you'll see an example.

This allows them to look at long equations that are simple and quick to answer. So when they are given a harder question like 82 + 76 and have to answer using their head, they are able to handle the mental load.

Drilling Math Questions

Anytime we are driving, sitting outside, simply hanging out.. I'll ask them verbal math questions. It puts them under the right amount of pressure because they'll race in their own mind, but they are in a calm setting - not schooling, timed test, or doing actual work. " What is 13 + 15 ... 22 + 52 .... 37 +12 " This also showed me if my other methods were working.

I am a Mommy of 4 on my 4th consecutive year of homeschooling. Education has always been important to me. I think children should be taught different tools and methods to solve problems. I hope this helps Parents and Educators alike. If you have any questions or feedback please leave a comment below! :)
