Creating your own body butter allows you to customize your skincare with natural ingredients that deeply nourish and hydrate your skin. Many commercial products contain additives and preservatives that may irritate sensitive skin or fail to provide lasting moisture. By making body butter at home, you control what goes on your skin and can tailor the formula to your preferences and skin type.
I make this specific recipe because my kids tend to get rough, dry, skin that can get worse if left untreated. I have experimented with different home made remedies and over the counter products over the years. The best results were when I made a thick body butter using oregano oil as the key ingredient.
When first started experimenting, I would tackle the dry areas before or when they start scratching by keeping it moisturized with thick potent oils. My kids did not like the oily feeling so I combined the best acting oils for their skin into a home made lotion or body. butter.
Every time I make the body butter or lotion, it comes out different - thicker or smoother.. this is ONLY because I make it at home for myself and sometimes I am doing it in between other tasks. I will explain how to get different consistencies.
Keep in mind, your home made body butter will not be like the store bought ones since they have preservatives, added chemicals. I make my own lotions and butters for the benefits of skin care rather the potent fragrant smells from store bought products.
Why Choose Homemade Body Butter?
Many people struggle with dry, flaky skin, especially in colder months or dry climates. Body butter is thicker than lotions, which make the application last longer and stay on. Commercial body butters often contain synthetic fragrances, preservatives, and fillers that can cause irritation or allergic reactions.
Making your own body butter lets you:
Use natural, skin-friendly ingredients without harmful chemicals
Adjust the texture from light to thick depending on your needs
Add your favorite essential oils for personalized scent and benefits
Save money by buying ingredients in bulk
Ensure freshness by making small batches
Ingredients for Ultimate Moisture
key ingredients mean you must use these for the body butter recipe
a handful bunch of Rosemary - key ingredient I grow my own rosemary and love using it for everything from home cleaning sprays, teas, body products, and more. Rosemary for your skin however is a game changer. It is so beneficial for clearing skin. Applying rosemary water as a toner is great if you want to keep a clear, even toned, and hydrated skin... but for the body butter I just want all of its anti inflammatory, anti microbial, and cleansing properties. Buy at your local market!
2 oz Oregano Oil - key ingredient I make my own oregano oil. Pure oregano oil is so valuable to health in ancient medicine and it is making a bigger impact other than being used in culinary settings. This is my favorite ingredient of the body butter since I used to apply the oil topically and saw great improvements with their dry skin. Oregano is great for inflamed skin. It will aid in deeply moisturizing and giving you healthy skin texture.
1/2 cup Coconut Oil
Fatty coconut oil is very moisturizing, creating a long lasting skin barrier. https://www.bulkapothecary.com/coconut-oil-92-degree/?searchid=0&search_query=oregano+oil
5 Drops Black Seed Oil
5 Drops of Black Seed Oil is enough but you can build tolerance as you make more recipes and you adjust.
Pure Black Seed Oil is very potent, helping rejuvenate and restore skin damage.
Castor Oil
Helps skin absorb the body butter.
2 tablespoons Beef Tallow
I extracted a small batch of like 2 tablespoons of beef tallow when I started my beef broth at home. I added it to my body butter. I am experimenting with this ingredient, it is my first time using it in body butter. but not needed to make a potent butter. The key ingredient in this again is oregano oil and rosemary.
1 cup BTMS 50 Conditioning Emulsifier - key ingredient
Emulsifying your skin products allows you to successfully blend water based ingredients with oil based ingredients. This is great because your product will not separate when sitting on your vanity. This is what I consider almost like a preservative but without being a preservative since it holds the product together.
For a guide on conditioning emulsifiers.. google !
3 cups Filtered Water - key ingredient
4. Essential Oils for Scent and Skin Benefits YOU CAN ADD
Adding essential oils can enhance your body butter with natural fragrance and therapeutic properties.
Lavender
Calming and soothing, lavender oil is great for sensitive or irritated skin.
Peppermint
Refreshing and cooling, peppermint oil can invigorate tired muscles.
Geranium
Balances oily and dry skin, with a floral scent.
Frankincense
Supports skin regeneration and has anti-inflammatory effects.
Note: Always dilute essential oils properly and perform a patch test to avoid allergic reactions.
How to Make Your Own Body Butter
Step 1
Using a double boiling method, add 2 cups of water to a bowl, and fresh bunch of rosemary. Let it boil for 10 minutes. STRAIN out the rosemary leaved and sprigs. Water will be a light brown.
Step 2
Mix all of the other ingredients in the boil one by one with the conditioning emulsifier being last. stir slowly until all melted and combined.
Step 3
Remove from heat and stir in essential oils for scent. Mix well to combine.
Step 4
Let the mixture cool slightly in fridge or on countertop but not solidify. I let mine get more solid than i usually do so my body butter is stiff which is still fine for me. But the more liquid-y you leave it, the thinner the body butter will be when you mix it after cooling. Use a hand mixer or kitchen aid mixer to whip the mixture for 5-10 minutes until it becomes fluffy and light.
Step 5
Spoon the whipped body butter into clean jars. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use within 3-6 months for best freshness.

Tips for Customizing Your Body Butter
Experiment with different essential oil blends to create your signature scent.
Add natural colorants like beetroot powder or turmeric for a tinted butter.
Use dried herbs or flower petals for decoration or infusion.
For sensitive skin, skip essential oils or use gentle options like chamomile.
